I came to my initial meeting with Connaught convinced that I was making progress on my own account and was therefore unlikely to need to pay for additional help, and, whilst I had some successes in reaching the interview stage over the next month or so, I continued in this frame of mind. However, as a number of these opportunities came to nothing, it increasingly dawned on me that, whilst I was 80 per cent there, it was that last 20 per cent that would enable me to land the role. It was also becoming an increasingly lonely plight and I was feeling embarrassed at my lack of success.

Signing up to Connaught meant that immediately I had an experienced professional to work with – I was no longer struggling on my own and, rather than embarrassment, I was able to build up my confidence again. The Connaught consultant quickly identified both what I was doing right and where there were areas for improvement, so I had a targeted programme to deal with the 20 per cent where I needed help without wasting time on the 80 per cent where I did not. Within a few months I was in later stage discussions on two positions, one of which I took. My one regret is that I did not come to Connaught earlier.
