Your Routes To Market

 

It is also essential to understand the various routes to market and how to use them to advantage.

There are four main options:

 

 1) Speculative approaches to potential employers

 Statistically this is not the best option.

  

 2) Responding to press and internet job ads

Other than in the Public Sector, roles at a senior level are generally not advertised in the public domain.

 

 3) Networking

This can be very effective if you know what you want, know how to do it, and are good at telling people how good you are. Most senior people feel uncomfortable and  ineffectual without proper training and preparation in this key area.

 

4) Full access to the headhunter community

This is very effective if you can indeed reach all the relevant people, as this opens up a myriad of connections into whatever area you are targeting. This is an extremely difficult option for the individual to be effective on their own account. Headhunters are inundated with unsolicited approaches direct from job seekers, many of which are accompanied by ineffective CVs and poor cover letters. This makes it very difficult for the individual to stand out in the crowd and get an audience.
